Conflict Management

Workplace violence is defined by HSE as “Any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work . So, this can include verbal abuse or threats as well as physical attacks.”. Therefore conflict management in the workplace is essential. The management of conflict has to be undertaken at every organisational level. Every level, from management to the lower leveller employees’ have a responsibility to manage conflict. This responsibility is to ensure that everyone, in the execution of their duty is free from workplace violence.

It is not part of anyone’s role to be verbally or physically abused . It is not acceptable or part of anyone’s job. Each and every incident should be investigated by management. If training needs are recognised this should be paid for by the employer. Also, this should be done on company time. Risk assessments may help to put safeguards in place, but an employee being able to recognise the conflict cycle will help to ensure their safety as well as any customer.
